This revealed a number of interesting features to investigate further, the top 8 are listed below. Following this first pass, I realized that I would need to reduce the number of features for my model even further. The BMI only tracks 56 countries and I needed to split these between training and test sets, leaving me with a training set of only 44 countries. Even a simple linear model with 8 feature complexity can be expected to overfit a training set of only 44 observations.

In order to eliminate a few more features, I employed a linear model with lasso regularization, optimizing the strength of regularization through 5 fold cross validation on the training set. The great thing about Lasso regularization is that it will automatically eliminate less important features by setting their corresponding coefficients to 0. Finally, the model was benchmarked against the test data, data that the model had not yet seen in training or cross validation.

Purchasing Power Parity Explained

I conceived a smilar concept in on my first trip outside Canada and U. Although the issue of exchange rates initially played a part in my confusion as to why there would be such cost differences, and now knowing of this theory of PPP, at the end of the day they still serve me well as a factor in determining where my next holiday might be. Governments should knock heads with their tourist bureaus to intice tavellers With gravy laden dollars to visit their countries in this world of ever growing globilization. This is a very good clarification of the PPP which is usually people over pass it.

Specially to understand what is going on in the global economy and understand the difference in living standards, the topic demystify the mystics to us who are out of the economics mainstream.

BUT it would be great if you put the country by country index for who want to do a quick reference. Thank you for your consistent effort.

I use the Big Mac index in my classes because it is a good exercise in foreign exchange rates. In reality, however, the Big Mac is not homogeneous across countries because the perception of what it is varies. Case in point is Colombia, where the perception of anything American is glorified and magnified to the n-th degree.

How bizarre the comparison, India for example has an implied rate of Rs. The same is true for all other countries as the chart looks so perverse for most countries.

The Theory Explained

All that the Big Mac Index says, relatively, is that countries around the world can afford to pay more for a Big Mac, than what America pays. That's a problem with Brazil. McDonald's is not a middle class fare. At least not the "Middle Class" propagandized to the world as emerging thanks to Bolsa Familia government stipends. They no longer prominently advertised Big Macs for sale and the sandwich, both individually and as part of value meals , was being sold for an unusually low price compared to other items. Guillermo Moreno , Secretary of Commerce in the Kirchner government, reportedly forced McDonald's to sell the Big Mac at an artificially low price to manipulate the country's performance on the Big Mac index.

A Buenos Aires newspaper stated "Moreno loses the battle". The Big Mac and virtually all sandwiches vary from country to country with differing nutritional values, weights and even nominal size differences.

Not all Big Mac burgers offered by the chain are exclusively beef. On 1 November , all three of the McDonald's in Iceland closed, primarily due to the chain's high cost of importing most of the chain's meat and vegetables, by McDonald's demands and standards, from the Eurozone.
